Market value

The current value of an asset based on supply and demand in the market.

Market value is the current value of an asset, liability or equity item based on market prices and on supply and demand in the market. It represents the amount a potential buyer or investor is willing to pay for the asset, or the value at which it is available for trading in the market.

How market value is determined

Market value is set through supply and demand in the market. The price is determined by investors and buyers on the basis of their assessment of the value, the potential return and the risk. Market value can vary over time because of changes in market sentiment, economic conditions and other factors.

What can it be used for?

Market value is used to assess the current value of an asset, liability or equity item. It gives an indication of what the market believes the asset is worth, and can influence decisions on purchases, sales or investments.

Tips for handling market value

  1. Keep up to date. Follow market trends and economic conditions that may affect the value of assets, liabilities or equity.
  2. Compare with similar assets. Compare the market value of assets with similar assets in the industry or the market in order to assess their relative value and potential return.
  3. Consider market conditions. Take account of market conditions and investor sentiment in order to understand possible fluctuations in market value, and adjust investment strategies accordingly.
  4. Use professional valuation. Consider obtaining a professional valuation in order to get an objective assessment of market value based on specific methods and analyses.

It is worth noting that market value can be more volatile and more exposed to fluctuations than carrying amount (book value). Investors and companies use market value to make decisions about purchases, sales and investments based on current market conditions and investment strategies.
